La Porte - Downtown - 'I' and 10th Street Clinic - Was on route for Trail of
Tears where the Indians had stopped and made camp. It is said that a young girl
died in the winter during their stay. Now it's a Clinic up top a small hill
across the street from La Porte High School Baseball Field on 'I' and 10th
Streets. People say that the elevator is played with, also the lower level
bathroom is often locked from inside with no windows leading outside, and
various objects moving across rooms (my understanding- chairs mostly).

La Porte - La Porte High School - Well in the girls restroom on hallway one,
toilets will flush and water will run without there being anyone in there.
Outside by a pillar there are cold spots and odd smells. Odd things like the
electricity shutting off and banging on lockers also occurs.

La Porte - La Porte Medical Building - Doors have been known to open and shut,
and a figure of an Indian maiden has been seen. This was the site of one of the
old Indian burial grounds.

La Porte - Posey chapel (near) - A century and a half ago a church was burnt
down and the preacher hung himself from a tree as you enter the gate. At night
you can see the activity under the pavilion that is where the chapel once stood.
Red eyes can be seen and a red light of some sort can be seen moving through the
woods.

LaPorte - Hangman's road/ Orelake - On this road, a young couple was driving
home from a date when all of a sudden, their car broke down. The young man went
for help while the girl sat in the car. When the man returned he couldn't find
his girlfriend. He figured she had gone to look for help also. A drop of blood
dripped on the windshield and he looked up above his car to find the girl
hanging from a tree. People have seen ghosts hanging, weird things in the woods,
and since the site is right next to a swamp, they say it is very creepy. It is a
popular place for breakdowns and a lot of people have been killed there by car
accidents.

Laporte

415 Virginia Ave. - A house was built here in 1856 and burnt down in 1885. A little girl was in the house when the fire happened and she died. The house was rebuilt and later became an apartment complex in 1950. People who have lived in the apartments over the years have seen a girl about the age of 15 or so that is all burned up. Things in the apartment will move by themselves, a long with cabinet doors and front doors opening and closing by themselves.

Belle Gunness House - You can sometimes hear people screaming.  You sometimes will also feel very cold.

Downtown - 'I' and 10th Street Clinic - Was on route for Trail of Tears where the Indians had stopped and made camp. It is said that a young girl died in the winter during their stay. Now it's a Clinic up top a small hill across the street from La Porte High School Baseball Field on 'I' and 10th Streets. People say that the elevator is played with, also the lower level bathroom is often locked from inside with no windows leading outside, and various objects moving across rooms (my understanding- chairs mostly).

Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation - this nursing home is haunted.  A woman was found on the floor, she did not fall out of the bed because both bed rails were still up. It is said that the nursing home was built over an ancient Indian burial ground.

Hangman's road/ Orelake - On this road, a young couple was driving home from a date when all of a sudden, their car broke down. The young man went for help while the girl sat in the car. When the man returned he couldn't find his girlfriend. He figured she had gone to look for help also. A drop of blood dripped on the windshield and he looked up above his car to find the girl hanging from a tree. People have seen ghosts hanging, weird things in the woods, and since the site is right next to a swamp, they say it is very creepy. It is a popular place for breakdowns and a lot of people have been killed there by car accidents.

Hook Mans Road - A small road which is said to be haunted by a old ghost of a pirate, who lived out in the country in some woods. If you go out there at night in the woods by the old huge house you can sometimes see an old guy with one hand and a hook on the other. It is said that many people have died out there.

Laporte Cinema - The legion at the La Porte Cinema is to be haunted by a young girl from 12-15 years of age. A cleaning crew once said that they saw her face in the floor tile and she has only appeared in a certain room. Three stories follow that reason. One: there was a pond and she had fallen into the lake and drowned to her death, second: A tiny carnival was once there and she had fallen off the Ferris wheel and died right after hitting the ground. The last one was: there was a house that the girl lived in with her family, and somehow a fire broke out at night and she slept right through it.

Laporte High School - Well in the girls restroom on hallway one, toilets will flush and water will run without there being anyone in there. Outside by a pillar there are cold spots and odd smells. Odd things like the electricity shutting off and banging on lockers also occurs.

Laporte Medical Building - Doors have been known to open and shut, and a figure of an Indian maiden has been seen. This was the site of one of the old Indian burial grounds.

Patten Cemetery- Victims of the Belle Gueniss murders are buried here, one of the worst murders ever in the state of Indiana . There is also said to be a killer who was executed buried in the same cemetery. It is said that if you knock over his grave stone he will come and find you.

Posey chapel and cemetery - A century and a half ago a church was burnt down and the preacher hung himself from a tree as you enter the gate. At night you can see the activity under the pavilion that is where the chapel once stood. Red eyes can be seen and a red light of some sort can be seen moving through the woods. Also many orbs are seen in this area, you may also hear a woman singing and someone playing a guitar in the background.

Soldiers Memorial Park - The walking trials of this park are haunted by a 9 year old boy that drowned in Stone Lake in 1930 right by the bridge.

Posey Cemetery

Posey Cemetery and Chapel

The story: A century and a half ago the church was burnt down and the preacher hung himself from a tree right after the front gate entrance. At night you can see the activity under the pavilion that is where the chapel once stood. Red eyes can be seen and a red light of some sort can be seen moving through the woods. Also many orbs are seen in this area, you may also hear a woman singing and someone playing a guitar in the background. Also the KKK have where known for hanging people by the trees in this cemetery.

It has also been said there this is where one of the worst murders in Indiana was executed and buried.
Date: April, 6 2008
Time: 2:00AM
Weather: Cool (40 degrees), mid-cloud sky.
Report: No report available

Location: Click here for directions
Address: 3908 County Rd. 1000 N. (Across the street from this address).
Long & Lat: N41.7529413 / W86.6274867

Our Encounter: Our encounters at the Posey Cometary was minimal. As we entered through the front gates we immediately saw an awning, where the church once stood. We took note of the "red eyes" and looked very diligently for them with no avail. After we snapped some pictures we heard quite a few noises from animals, chimes, and banging. Further investigation lead us to a barn towards the back of the cemetery. The barn was located off the cemetery property and seemed like it was quite active and housed many animals. It was 2AM and the lights in the barn where on, and there was activity in it.

For the chiming, we noticed on selected headstones there was wind chimes placed. So we were able to rule out the animals, wind chimes, and the banging. We also took some pictures of the tree that the KKK used to hang people throughout the early 19th century. We did a thorough scan of the entire graveyard and found nothing. We took plenty of pictures and found some interesting orbs, but nothing out of the ordinary. If you find anything in the Posey Cemetery gallery please shoot us an email and let us know.

Patton Cemetery

The story: Patton Cemetery contains the graves of several LaPorte pioneers and a Jewish burial ground. The Jewish cemetery, located on the eastern side of Patton Cemetery, was founded in 1854. Several of the tombstones are in Hebrew and many others list the birthplace of the deceased, making them perfect for genealogical research. In the southeastern section of Patton Cemetery is a grave with a most unusual history. This is the grave of A. K. Heigelein, the last victim of the infamous Belle Gunness. Belle's story in LaPorte begins in 1904 when either a meat cleaver or a sausage grinder fell off a kitchen shelf and killed her second husband. Shortly thereafter, she began advertising in lonely hearts columns for a fairly well-off husband. Interested men were invited to her McClung Road farm after first being asked to convert all their holdings to cash. Helgelein came to the Gunness farm in late 1907 or early 1908 from Dakota. After a long absence and no communication, his brother wrote to Mrs. Gunness and was told that A. K. Heigelein had returned to Norway. On April 27, 1908, Belle Gunness drove into LaPorte and made a will leaving all her possessions to her children should they survive her or to a Norwegian orphan home in Chicago if they did not. Early in the morning of April 28, her farm burned to the ground and Belle Gunness and her adopted children were believed to have died in the fire. Her handy man, Ray Lamphere, was arrested for murder and arson. Heigelein's brother read about the fire in a Chicago newspaper and hurried to LaPorte where he managed to convince the sheriff to do a little exploratory digging in the Gunness farmyard. His brother's mutilated body was quickly found, along with the remains of 11 others in various stages of decomposition. As the news spread, thousands flocked to LaPorte to see the farm on "Murder Hill." Ray Lamphere was convicted of arson but, before his death from tuberculosis in the prison at Michigan City, he revealed that Belle Gunness had not died in the fire and that he had burned the house on her orders. After his death, Lamphere was buried in Rossburg Cemetery on Hwy. 20 and Wilhelm Rd. Many of the bodies discovered on Belle's farm were found to contain quantities of arsenic in their stomachs. Whether or not Belle Gunness died in the fire in 1908, she remains a fiendish and mysterious figure of LaPorte County's past.

Our Encounter: As we pulled up to Patton cemetery we realized how large it was. The cemetery looks like a newer generation cemetery with houses all around it. It rests on a lot roughly 50+ acres in size. We pulled our vehicle inside the cemetery and started following the windy roads within. As we drove we desperately looked for a place to park our vehicle and start our investigations. Towards the back of the cemetery we found a great spot to park. It looked like they were paving something. We parked next to a wooden shack that looked like it was decaying pretty badly (probably the spookiest part of the cemetery).

We found ourself following a path which led us to an entrance of the 'old' section of the cemetery. It's entrance had two white pillars with a nice brick walkway. As we followed it inside we snapped some pictures of interesting graves and headstones. We then saw two spotlights on our vehicle and rushed over. To our surprise it was two Michigan City police cars inspecting our vehicle. Though we called the Michigan City police station and told them we were coming, they still kicked us out. They claim that the neighbors from the local neighborhood watch claimed we where causing 'trouble'. We graciously left and snapped a picture of their wonderful car.

So tip for anyone looking to go to this cemetery. Make sure you call ahead and make sure they know your coming. It seems that there was miscommunication between officers when we went, hopefully you have better luck.
